How I used DuPont CORIAN® on my
Ring Master instead of wood
"DuPont CORIAN® is a solid surface, non-porous, acrylic material available in over 80 different colors. Having worked for a DuPont CORIAN® distributor and a Certified Fabricator, my knowledge of CORIAN® has contributed to my tremendous appreciation for the product.'

"I began turning small projects (such as pens, light pulls, bottle stoppers, etc…) and was amazed at CORIAN’s® versatility. I am always thinking about new projects to create using CORIAN®. I was interested in making CORIAN® bowls, but was discouraged by the amount of wasted material, using conventional turning methods.'

"While at a Wood Working show, I saw a Ring Master demonstration. I was, to say the least, extremely excited! Armed with the brochure I was given, I went home, researched the product, and wrote down several questions I wanted to ask about the Ring Master and its capacity to work with CORIAN®. The next day I returned to the show and visited with the representative demonstrating the Ring Master. He answered all of my questions, so, feeling quite confident, I purchased the Ring Master #740 (to mount onto my Jet lathe). Upon paying for the Ring Master, the representative assured me that his job actually began after the purchase (with support like that, I couldn’t go wrong). On a similar note, having, on occasion, contacted PNI (the Ring Master manufacturer), I’ve found that the Engineering Services Specialist is incredibly helpful, supportive, and wonderful to work with.'

"Once my Ring Master was up and running, it was fun to operate, right from the start. I was really surprised that I could turn CORIAN® rings so easily. I was able to, proficiently, put together bowls of varying shapes and sizes (and the immense color selection of CORIAN® even furthered the design possibilities).'

"Working with CORIAN® is much like working with wood, however, because of CORIAN’s® density, the speed at which you must cut the rings is much slower than with wood.'

"For gluing CORIAN® rings together, I know of a couple of options. DuPont makes a product called CORIAN® Joint Adhesive (a two-part bonding agent that, once mixed, is essentially liquid CORIAN®). The Joint Adhesive is available in colors complimentary to the solid surface material. Another option for adhering CORIAN® rings (and the one that I currently use) is Cyanoacrylate glue. However, the set time is almost immediate, so you must accurately position the rings quickly and be careful not to allow any movement while tightening the clamp.'

"Both CORIAN® and wood have their individual advantages and disadvantages. While there is the absence of wood grain, CORIAN’s® particulate patterns offer virtually invisible joint lines (allowing for an uninterrupted pattern). While CORIAN® will dull your blades and turning tools much faster than most species of wood, unlike wood, CORIAN® presents no end grain problem to work around and can be polished to a high gloss finish by simply using different grades of sandpaper (from coarse to finer grit), then finishing with rubbing compound and countertop polish. …There’s no stain, polyurethane, or other finishing mess, and no waiting for an application to dry. Seeing the immediate transformation during the finishing process is truly awesome! And with over 80 colors available to work with, CORIAN® presents a virtually limitless medium with which to express your creativity. It’s a great material to work with.

From Ring Master Tool:
One of the greatest joys in marketing the Ring Master is the wonderful response and feedback that we continually get from owners and users of their Ring Masters. Ring Master attaches to many popular lathes and is also made for use without a lathe. Many Ring Master users experiment with cutting lucite or plexi-glass. This is the first user we have found using DuPont Corian, a material that's typically used in counter tops.
